An Interview with Our Founder: William Murdock on the Passion Behind Paint On Numbers Canada

What inspired you to start Paint On Numbers Canada?

William: I wanted to make painting approachable. A blank canvas intimidates many people, so I wanted a way to remove that barrier while leaving room for creative choice. Paint by numbers provides structure, guidance, and the satisfaction of completing a beautiful piece. I also wanted a Canadian brand that takes material quality seriously and supports customers when things do not go as planned.

What were the biggest early challenges?

William: Sourcing consistent, high-quality materials was the first major challenge. We tested canvases, paints, and brushes until we found combinations that delivered a reliable painting experience. Another challenge was changing perceptions; many people think paint by numbers is only for children, and we wanted to show that it is a legitimate, relaxing pursuit for adults as well.

Quality materials make the painting process genuinely enjoyable.

How do you ensure quality and variety?

William: Every design goes through testing. We check numbering clarity, paint coverage, and overall ergonomics. We also curate a wide range of subjects, landscapes, animals, portraits, and more, so there is something for everyone. When possible, we feature Canadian artists and themes to give the collection a distinct character.

What part of the role do you enjoy the most?

William: Seeing finished work from our customers. Photos of completed paintings and the notes people send about how much joy the process brought them are the most rewarding part of this business. That confirmation keeps the whole team focused on quality and support.
